Thing a Week

Each week, do a thing to sharpen my terminal-native workflow (new tools, optimized config, side projects). Basically this blog is to force me to actually complete those "I should..." thoughts instead of putting them in an infinite to-do list.

Tweaks: Zoom a tmux pane for screen sharing

Tweaks: Zoom a tmux pane for screen sharing

My main setup is to have two terminals open with my main on a large widescreen monitor with multiple tmux splits. Sharing this to coworkers who might be looking at a small laptop screen is chaotic, especially if I have code, logs, OpenCode, scratch panes open, etc. I have to take time to resize the code panel, squishing all the other ones.

Tweaks: Save time with cd paths in zsh

Tweaks: Save time with cd paths in zsh

Type cd my-work-repo-1 from anywhere and land in ~/Documents/work/my-work-repo-1. zsh's cdpath is one of my most used zsh features and I noticed how much I missed it when my new machine didn't have it set up.

Tweaks: New Jujutsu Tug and Push Alias

Tweaks: New Jujutsu Tug and Push Alias

With jujutsu, which I'd recommend over git whether you're new to it or a git veteran of 18 years like myself, some common aliases have emerged to replace running multiple commands. I've made a few changes on my main branch here:

Tweaks: Refreshing Neovim Config for v0.12

Tweaks: Refreshing Neovim Config for v0.12

I've been setting up a new laptop and have been pleasantly surprised that while transferring my old config to the new, nearly all the programs I use that have heavy customizations (zsh, tmux, ghostty, git, jj) have all worked without needing adjustments even when installing updated versions. Neovim requires a bit more but it wasn't too bad...

Improving My Neovim Spellcheck Workflow

Spellcheck in Neovim is a feature I use a bit and I wanted to improve my workflow.

Tweaks: Zsh Startup Time (2.5s -> 0.08s)

Tweaks: Zsh Startup Time (2.5s -> 0.08s)

Problem: Every new terminal and tmux pane took ~2.5 seconds to show the prompt. With 100–200 windows/panes opened per day in my terminal-native workflow, that's 4–8 minutes of waiting daily. I'd tolerated it because my .zshrc hadn't been meaningfully touched since 2010 and I wasn't eager to dive into that project.
